How to Register a Car Purchased In Another State

When you’ve purchased a new Bentley at Bentley Austin near Dallas due to our fantastic selection and prices and are looking to bring to another state, the first thing you may be asking yourself is “how do I register my new vehicle out of state?”. Luckily, if you’re planning on buying a car from us and bringing it to a state other than Texas, all that will be required is signing the proper documents and taking a trip to your local Department of Motor Vehicles, or DMV. Here’s exactly how to register a car purchased in another state:

  1. Ask for a bill of sale that has the purchase price you paid listed clearly and find your local DMV on a website like DMV Near Me. Usually, your local DMV website will be a .gov site that’s a part of your state’s official government website.
  2. When you visit your local DMV in person, make sure to bring these documents with you:
    1. Bill of sale
    2. Completed application for vehicle transaction form
    3. Title of the vehicle signed by the previous owner
    4. Lienholders’ names and address
    5. Filled out odometer disclosure state for title transfer
    6. Tax Form RUT-50 Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction
    7. Registration fees
    8. Proof of insurance
    9. Proof of residency

When you visit the DMV, be sure to also tell the customer service representative there that you bought your vehicle in another state with the intent of titling and registering it at your address in the same state where your DMV is located.

  1. You should receive your bill of sale back, but the DMV will keep your TX title, and ask that you pay the appropriate difference in sales tax between the two states.
  2. You will be mailed a new title in the state where you plan on registering your vehicle.

Taxes and Fees on Out-of-State Cars

Can you buy a car out of state? Absolutely? Should you? It’s often cost-effective, but you’ll want to make sure it makes financial sense, since you’ll need to pay the difference in sales tax between the states you buy your vehicle in. You’ll also be required to pay any applicable processing fees at your local DMV. Still, those are the only major financial considerations when buying a vehicle out of state vs. buying one in your residence outside the Houston, TX area.
